Video: Viola Davis Explains Why a Lack of Roles Matters

Coming from LCC Theatre Company, which was founded in 1995 to provide a space for Asian Americans in acting, I gained an awareness of the lack of representation in media of people other than beautiful English-speaking whites. As a consequence, people of color, people outside Hollywood’s standards of beauty, and people who don’t speak English have fewer roles, few role models, and less presence in society. In this short clip from an interview with Oprah, Viola Davis talks about the “crisis” this creates for black actresses.
